When the water volume increases with nowhere to go, an expansion tank allows excess water to enter the pre-pressurized tank. As the temperature and pressure reaches its maximum, the diaphragm flexes against an air cushion to allow for increased water expansion, because unlike water, air is compressible. When the system is opened again or the water cools, water leaves the tank and returns to the system.
Both the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) require thermal expansion control to be addressed in plumbing systems. A temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve is not considered a thermal expansion device. This is because when water is allowed to continuously drip from the T&P relief valve, minerals from the water can build up on the valve, eventually blocking it. This blockage can render the T&P valve useless and potentially lead to hot water heater explosions.
Steam pressurereducing valve working principle
The 403 piston-actuated pressure regulating are pilot-operated, piston-actuated, pressure regulators primarily used for reducing pressure in STEAM systems. These regulators can be equipped with an optional internal sensing line which simplifies installation (Suffix I). The 403 Series has all stainless steel internals for high-pressure applications up to 450 PSIG. Double Spring Option is available for wider range of reduced pressures.
The 403 piston-actuated pressure regulating valves contain a separate pilot valve which is mounted on top of the main valve. The valve senses the downstream pressure (low pressure side) and precisely modulates a small amount of steam from the upstream side (high pressure side) to the top of the piston chamber, which in turn controls the opening of the main valve. When steam demand increases and downstream pressure starts to drop, the valve is opened further, allowing for additional flow. These regulators have increased accuracy and consistency of set pressure when compared to the Direct-operated type. Set pressure is more stable and will only vary a few percent over the full flow range.

From the Capacity chart, find the inlet pressure and required regulator outlet pressure. Follow across chart to nearest capacity (steam) that meets or slightly exceeds demand requirements. Follow vertically up to determine appropriate size. When exact application values are not shown, interpolate between values. From the spring range chart, select the spring range that accommodates the required outlet set pressure.
