Cold Water Supply Temperature: The incoming cold water temperature range is 40 to 70 °F (4 to 21 °C). The cold water temperature must be at least 10° F (5.6 °C) less than the temperature of the delivered tepid water.

Cold Water Bypass: If the supply of hot water is restricted or interrupted, an internal bypass allows the valve to deliver cold water only. In bypass mode, the valve delivers 38 GPM (144 L/min) at 30 PSI (2.1 bar) pressure drop.

Common replacement parts: With proper weekly cycling, these valves should give you years of trouble-free service. If you encounter an issue, contact Guardian Technical Support to troubleshoot. If the factory identifies an component issue, we can special order any parts you may require.

Looking for an Illinois plumbing continuing education class “that doesn’t suck” near you? Need 4 hours of Continuing Ed for your plumbing license renewal? Our CE classes are held in South Elgin, serving the western suburbs of Chicago, covering Cook, Kane, and DuPage Counties, but all licensed Illinois plumbers are welcome!

Tempering valves, like all emergency eyewash and shower equipment, must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and maintained on a regular basis. Under ANSI Z358.1-2014, all emergency equipment should be activated weekly and inspected at least annually. Tempering valves should be treated the same and, in addition, must be regularly cleaned and cycled.

Hot Water Shutoff: The valve has an internal PTFE valve seat. If the supply of cold water is interrupted, the valve will close completely and not deliver any water at all, eliminating any possibility of scalding in the event of cold water failure.

Tepid Water Temperature: The temperature of tepid water is adjustable within a range of 65 to 95 °F (18 - 35°C) and is locked in position once set. The high temperature limit stop is set at 90 °F (32 °C) to prevent mis-adjustment.

Quality Assurance: This valve is ASSE certified under ANSI/ASSE 1071. Each valve is fully assembled and factory tested prior to shipment.

Mounting: The valve inlets can be positioned on the top, back or bottom of the valve. The outlet can be on the top or bottom. The valve can be configured in the field for any mounting position and is furnished with a heavy duty stainless steel mounting bracket.

Application: This thermostatic mixing valve blends hot and cold water to deliver tepid water. The valve has flow capacity of 50 gallons (189 liters) per minute at 30 PSI (2.1 bar) pressure drop. The valve can be used to supply emergency showers or combination safety stations. Depending on the water supply size and pressure, the valve can supply multiple units.

TIMES: All 4 hr Continuing Education courses of instruction are held on Saturdays, sign in begins at 7:30. Class starts promptly at 8 am and ends at 12 pm.

Checkstops/Filters: Each inlet has a lockable shutoff valve for maintenance, an internal check valve to prevent backflow, and a stainless steel basket filter to remove debris from the water flow.

Documentation available:  G6040 specification sheet w/ measured drawings, written specifications (Word format), and the  G6040 installation, operation and maintenance guide.

Application Note: Pursuant to ANSI Z358.1-2014, the water delivered by emergency equipment should be "tepid". Tepid is defined as moderately warm or lukewarm, and is generally considered to be between 60 °F (15 °C) and 100 °F (38 °C). However, in certain circumstances, a chemical reaction may be accelerated or otherwise affected by the water temperature. Please consult with a medical advisor to determine the optimum delivered water temperature prior to specifying, installing or using a tempering valve.

The Guardian G6040 Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV or tempering valve) is ideal for providing the tepid water required for safety showers and combination safety stations per ANSI Standard Z358.1-2014. It can also supply multiple eyewash and drench hose stations. This unit is available in four additional configurations which include your choice of  surface or recess mounted cabinets in powder-coated steel or stainless steel.

Tempering valves will not deliver the appropriate water temperature if the system has not been sized correctly. Please refer to the flow capacities and supply pressure requirements listed above when designing the tempered water system and selecting tempering valves.

Supply Pressure: The maximum incoming water pressure is 125 PSI (8.6 bar). The pressure of the hot and cold water supplies can vary up to 25% and still deliver the flow and temperature required by ANSI/ASSE 1071.

Temperature Control: This valve has precision thermal actuator that senses incoming water temperature and automatically blends water to the preset temperature. The valve is factory set to deliver 85 °F (29 °C) water. The desired temperature of the tepid water can be adjusted as required and then locked. The units comes furnished with dial temperature gauge to monitor the temperature of tepid water which includes color-coded green, yellow and red to indicate safe and unsafe operating temperatures.
