Your water heater warms and then stores heated water inside of its metal tank. Most water heaters store water at between 120 and 140 degrees—this is typically warmer than what’s needed at the tap, but not cool enough to become cold by the time it reaches your shower heads and faucets. At this temperature, the PSI (pounds per square inch) pressure inside your water heater is well within the parameters your water heater was designed to handle.

Problems typically arise when things heat up. Whether due to a change in the temperature setting or due to a malfunction, higher water temperatures mean more pressure inside the tank shell. At about 200 degrees, the water heater is starting to feel the stress of a higher PSI.

Like everything else associated with your water heater, this valve is subjected to the long-term spread of corrosion. This can cause the valve to no longer emit water or steam, or to spring a leak. If you’re noticing dripping water coming from the T&P valve, you have a problem that goes far beyond the small pool of water on the floor. A leaking valve indicates a pressure problem, which means your water heater is going to struggle to keep its water at the right temperature.

To disengage a connected socket and plug, the water pressure in the hose must first be released. If you plan on placing a quick connector at the end of your garden hose for changing out watering tools, you may want to consider adding an ELEY shut-off valve first. Without a shut-off valve, in order to release the water pressure, you would have to either 1) walk back to the faucet to turn the water off or 2) kink the hose near the end of the hose. A better method would be to first attach an ELEY shut-off valve on the end of the hose and then thread the quick-connect socket onto the shut-off valve. This would allow you to shut off the water flow, release the pressure with the watering tool, and then disengage the quick connect set. ELEY offers two shut-off valves. Item #1117 is a straight shut-off valve. Item #1116 (shown in this video) is the same valve, but equipped with a swivel fitting, allowing you to rotate the valve, once tightened down, to position the ON/OFF lever in a desired position.

Our Garden Hose Quick Connect Maintenance Kit (Item #1185, sold separately) comes with a 100% Silicone grease tube and 10 replacement O-rings. A thin coating of the silicone grease applied to the O-ring once or twice per year will extend its life and keep the engagement and disengagement of the two pieces smooth and easy.

This is where the water heater pressure-relief valve comes into play. When the pressure reaches a certain point, it forces the valve open. Your relief valve is connected to a long discharge tube. When the valve opens up, both steam and hot water are forced out of this tube and onto the ground around your water heater.

In particular, it may be challenging to get the sleeve on the socket to slide to disengage the plug. The quick-connect sets were designed to operate in above freezing conditions.

Your water heater pressure-relief valve—also known as a T&P valve—is a critically important safety feature of your water heater. In short, this valve helps alleviate excess pressure from within your water heater, helping prevent potential tank bursts and leaks. A T&P valve can be found on every standard water heater and on some tankless water heaters.

No. The plug cannot be removed while under pressure.  The water pressure must be first turned off before the quick-connect set can be separated. There are two methods of doing this. First, by shutting the water off back at the faucet/water source. The second method is to install a ball valve directly before the socket. (See photo) This will allow you to shut the water off right at the quick-connect set, without having to return to the faucet/water source. Eley offers two garden hose ball valves that work perfectly for this application, our straight Garden Hose Ball Valve and our Swivel Garden Hose Ball Valve.

Luckily, testing your valve doesn’t require increasing the temperature and pressure to unsafe levels. Instead, you’ll need to position a bucket under the discharge pipe. Carefully pull the valve open. If water comes out of the discharge tube and into your bucket, that’s a good thing. Release hold of the valve. Its lever should “snap” back into place and water should stop coming from the tube. This, too, is an indication that your relief valve is working as it should.

Yes. A quick connect repair and maintenance kit is available, which contains ten O-rings and a tube of ELEY Silicone Grease, which is designed explicitly for our O-ring material. The Part number for this kit is Item #1185. If you want to try and find an O-ring locally, note that it is a metric O-ring. An inch O-ring will not work.  The dimensions and tolerances of all the pieces must work together or, the assemblies will not work properly. The O-Ring is a 21 x 2 which is the ID and width.  That makes the OD 25mm.  Materials are important also.  We use a drinking water safe EPDM.  Periodically applying a thin coating of this 100% silicone grease to the O-rings will extend their life and improve performance.
