Hello guys, I have a quite problem going on with my sprinkler system. My problem is as follows. Today around 4am I woke up to extremely loud banging coming from the water line going out to the sprinkler system. Im not sure where exactly the sound if coming from but it is from that line. I went outside to see the backflow preventer and it was shaking and expelling water from the top. While this was all occurring there was still water flowing through the zones but at a reduced pressure. I assume that it had just switched zones. I stopped the banging by shutting off the water valve before the backflow preventer. The problem would persist if the valve was not fully closed. This issue does not always happen, but it seems to be increasing in occurrence. I've installed a check valve and a water hammer arrestor but the problem still persists. I don't know what else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! This is similar to the backflow preventer I have: [images.homedepot-static.com] Edited 1 times.

On the top cap there should be the make, model and size of the device, The size could be on the side of the device, also. Sounds like the pressure vacuum breaker needs to be rebuilt. I usually replace the check piston seal, the poppit seal and the cap o-ring.

As long as the ball valves work good,I would just rebuild it. Replacing the device requires soldering. Its usually cheaper to buy a whole device and rob all the parts from it to rebuild your device.

Hey guys, I decided to replace the backflow preventer to make sure there couldn't be anything wrong with it. Unfortunately the problem still persists. I really don't know what else could be wrong. Could it be some zone valves that are bad or the controller? I really hoped that the problem would be fixed. If you guys need anymore information please let me know.
