Circulating pumps are devices that will establish the flow of a liquid in circuits of heating or cooling installations. It is a specific type of pump used to circulate hot water in a closed circuit, commonly found in a hydronic heating or cooling system. They are generally used to circulate domestic hot water in the home. They are designed for a tap (or another outlet) to provide hot water on demand, or a short time after you make the request for water. In typical one-way plumbing where a circulation pump is not present, water is simply piped from the water heater through the pipes to the tap. Once the tap is shut off, the water remaining in the pipes cools. This results in having to wait for hot water the next time the tap is opened. A circulation pump will constantly circulate a small amount of hot water through the pipes from the heater to the farthest fixture, ensuring the water in the pipes is always hot meaning no water is wasted once the tap is opened. The trade-off is the energy consumed in operating the pump and the additional demand on the water heater. From January 2013 the EU has legislated that all wet running circulators installed in central heating systems must conform with the ErP directive. This states that standard circulators can only be manufactured with a class 'A' energy efficiency rating; this EU legislation also covers the supply of replacement motor assemblies.
