On a closed system such as a tank or heat exchanger, an unintended vacuum can result in the destruction of the tank or Heat exchanger. A Vacuum Breaker could be considered as a safety device similar to a safety valve as it could prevent property damage and loss of production. In steam systems it is most commonly used in modulating/temperature controlled applications. For direct steam injection installation it will prevent reverse flow /suckback of product into the system. For systems fitted with a steam trap it will minimize stall conditions (stall is a condition where the heat transfer space becomes flooded with condensate as a result of insufficient differential pressure).

The vacuum breaker should be installed in a vertical position. It can be installed on any system suffering from non-required vacuum conditions. However, they are most commonly installed on steam temperature controlled systems. On steam systems, the vacuum breaker should be installed at the highest point in the system where it will not be flooded with condensate. This assists with condensate removal and accurate temperature control and avoids reverse flow/suckback.
