Overall, by introducing these alternative irrigation systems I reckon I've reduced my potential water usage by up to 80 per cent over conventional methods. Whilst my garden is larger than most, these water saving ideas are just as applicable to your garden at home.

About a year ago I moved to a property north of Sydney on the New South Wales Central Coast. It's an area without town water, so water conservation is a big issue, especially when it comes to designing and maintaining the garden. I've been experimenting with ideas to make the garden as water efficient as possible.

We've been picking Italian parsley virtually every day for months for scrambled eggs and it's been made possible by an ingenious device. It's a gravity fed irrigation system that is being run entirely on tank water. I've also had great success with an innovative water filled tree guard. Watering with buckets had seen advanced trees going backwards. Since applying the tree guard a couple of months ago there was an instant spurt of growth which has continued.

You can bury as many porous pots as needed for each bed. The only major drawback that I've found is that the tubing and pots are vulnerable to careless work with the trowel. The plant roots are attracted to the water seeping from the pot and it's possible to add liquid fertiliser to the tank as an added time saver.

So just how effective have the irrigation systems been? The mounds were successful at trapping stormwater which then gradually seeped into the soil and resulted in steady growth with zero irrigation.
The property is 40 hectares and currently the garden covers about 1 hectare. There is a bore well on site, as well as two large water tanks, but there is no access to mains water. This greatly restricts the amount of water available for the garden.

A key criteria for the irrigation systems is that as well as making every drop reach its target, they be low cost and energy efficient, which means I don't need extensive infrastructure, such as pumps and mains power. I've landscaped the garden to maximise water conservation. To try and catch as much of the stormwater coming down the hill as possible I've built a vegie garden as a series of open faced terraces. That's great as long as it rains, but over the last couple of years we've had less than half the average annual rainfall. The plants are struggling because there is not enough water to sustain the fast growing plants. So I've been trialling a new water efficient irrigation system for the more intensive area of the garden.
The innovative tree guard is a perfect way of establishing woody plants. I planted a red flowering gum about six months ago as an advanced specimen and it's struggled ever since through an extended dry period. I'm going to give it a helping hand. I've banged in a few stakes for support, and then it's simply a matter of putting the guard over the top, and filling it with water. The water acts to insulate the tree from extremes of temperature, and also when a dripper is inserted at the base of the garden it delivers 20 litres of water very slowly over about a month.
Jordan Valve has a large line of pressure reducing regulators to meet many different specifications and applications, from self-operated to pilot-operated.
The gravity fed system has been a great success. To ensure the system works you firstly need a water source, which can be a small drum or a much larger rainwater tank. The water flows into tubing under the force of gravity. The really clever part of the system is a series of porous ceramic pots which are attached to the tubing and are buried in the ground - this also minimises water loss by evaporation. These just fill up and seep into the soil. Oviously it's important that the water is higher than the level of the garden bed to help it flow under the force of gravity. The water gradually seeps out into the soil and the plant roots find this very efficient water source.
