If your New Jersey home has an irrigation system, you probably already know how important it is to have winterization and springtime startup done, but there may be other less obvious components of sprinkler care you have overlooked. More specifically, responsibilities related to installing and maintaining a backflow prevention device.

Licensed plumbers must assess each site to work out its specific backflow containment needs. If you've determined the site's hazard rating as low, our 20 mm and 25 mm water meters already have a simple backflow prevention device in them. If the property's water meter is larger than 25 mm, you'll need a separate backflow device. Find out more about meters and metered standpipes. You must advise the property owner of the backflow requirements and install a backflow prevention device appropriate to the property's hazard rating. You must also tell the owner if the device needs to be tested each year.

The backflow prevention device is installed at the valve where your irrigation water lines diverge from your main water line and guarantees that the water in your lines always flows in the correct direction. Much like the valves in your heart prevent blood from flowing backward between beats, the backflow preventer keeps irrigation water from flowing backwards into your drinking water.

You don't need to attach photographs to your test reports when you upload them using the new backflow prevention application. However, your uploaded test reports may be subject to an audit. If we audit your lodgement, we'll send you an email asking you to email the photographic evidence to us as proof.

We no longer accept reports for zone and individual backflow devices. Contact NSW Fair Trading if you have questions about these types of devices.

The water in your irrigation lines contains chemicals like fertilizer and pesticide, and these chemicals can contaminate your drinking water if flow reverses for any reason—usually from changes in water pressure or damage to the irrigation line. A contamination from backflow can pose a serious health risk, leading to serious illness or, in extreme cases, death. Installing a backflow preventer guarantees that when a flow reversal occurs your drinking water won't be affected.

All fire services, fire hydrant and sprinkler services require the installation of a Double Check Detector Assembly (DCDA). The materials used on the upstream side of the DCDA and including the outlet control valve must be WaterMark approved for plumbing and drainage installations. There can be no galvanised pipe and fittings on the upstream/inlet side of the containment device.

All Wet Irrigation & Lighting is here to keep your irrigation system backflow-free and your family safe from the health risks associated with backflow. If you have an annual service contract, we’ll take care of your backflow inspection as part of your regular service, or you can call us at (973) 366-8754 to schedule an inspection now.

A cross-connection is any actual or potential connection between a potable (drinking) water system and any source of pollution or contamination.
