A3: On new installations, the pressure regulator is usually located where the water line comes into the home just inside the foundation (next to main shut-off valve). On some older installations, the pressure regulator might be found on the street side of the water meter. Distribution department staff can help with determining the location of new regulators and helping to find existing regulators.

A recirculating pump for your tankless water heater can provide instant hot water at any faucet, while also saving you money on your energy bills.
Pressureregulating valve
A2: A pressure regulator is a spring-loaded valve that regulates pressure on the downstream (house) side of the valve. Altering the degree of spring compression changes the downstream pressure.
A4: The best way to know if the pressure regulator is working is to install a pressure gauge on each side of the regulator. If the upstream gauge reads higher than the downstream gauge, then the regulator is probably working. Some symptoms of pressure regulator malfunction include sustained or initial bursts of unusually high pressure at faucets and shower heads and water being discharged from the relief valve on your domestic water heater. Sudden loss in pressure is another sign of a malfunctioning regulator.

A1: A household water pressure regulator reduces the water pressure from the public water main to a pressure that is usable by the customer and compatible with normal household plumbing and fixtures. It also helps prevent pressure surges from entering the household plumbing from the public main. High water pressure can result in dripping faucets and water pipes, and it can damage appliances.
Water pressure
A6: This is partly a matter of owner preference. Most homeowners set their pressure at approximately 50 pounds per square inch (psi). Lower settings will help conserve water and prolong plumbing and fitting life while higher settings will have the opposite effects.
A hot water recirculating pump is great for convenience and comfort, as it means getting hot water faster when you turn on the hot tap. For homes with on-demand or tankless water heaters, this is important, as it can otherwise be a little bit of a wait before the cold water clears out of the pipes and the hot water reaches you. When a hot water recirculating pump starts having or causing problems with the system, though, it can become more frustrating than anything else, especially if you don’t know what to do about it. Here are a few signs there is a problem with your hot water recirculating pump, and what to do about it.

Like with most things, a lot of noise coming from your hot water recirculation pump isn’t a good sign. Once again, there are a few different things it could be.
A5: Yes. A homeowner or a plumber can use manufacturer's instructions for adjustment. The adjustment mechanism is usually a screw on top of the regulator. Turning this screw changes the degree of spring compression. Generally, turning the screw clockwise increases house water pressure and turning the screw counter-clockwise reduces house pressure. Repair kits for rebuilding pressure regulators are usually available from the manufacturer.
The District has designated a Compliance Coordinator for website disability-related accommodations. The Compliance Coordinator has received training in website accessibility and updates the site in accordance with those best practices and requirements.
A8: There are two reasons: 1.) Most public water mains are supplied by pumps or pressure reducing valves. This equipment may produce temporary high pressure surges, which can be transmitted to household plumbing. A properly operating household pressure regulator will help prevent these surges from entering your plumbing. 2.) Your municipality might increase the pressure in the main line that supplies your house.

If you turn on the cold water and get hit with hot water instead, you may actually have a problem with the bypass valve that’s a part of your hot water recirculation system, rather than the pump itself. The valve is designed to close and keep the hot water in the pipes once it’s up to temperature. When it cools down too much, the valve opens and the pump pushes the water back into the cold lines, making room for freshly heated water in the hot pipe. If you have hot water in the cold side, on the other hand, the valve may actually be staying open when it shouldn’t be.
