Unvented Components Europe have a large range of Pressure & Temperature Relief Valves available. Pressure and temperature relief valves are designed to provide protection against over pressurization, which can occur within an unvented hot water system if the input temperature or pressure controls fail. The valves are designed to be fitted to the upper portion of a hot water cylinder as this is where the hottest temperatures in the system will be found. If the system rises above 95°C, the wax mixture within the element of the temperature probe will expand, this will lift the valve off its seat and release water to waste, therefore reducing the pressure within the cylinder. Also if the water pressure increases (without temperature increase) the valve will stay closed until the set pressure of the relief mechanism is reached, at which point the valve will again open and the excess pressure is relieved. Under fault conditions, the pressure and temperature relief valve (P&T or T&P valve) will discharge water to prevent over temperature of the system. The drain pipework from the valve must discharge through a tundish, positioned within 500mm of the pressure and temperature relief valve, to a safe and visible position to alert the householder of a fault condition with the unvented system and prevent damage to the property.~

This is a fairly typical set up. The shutoff valve comes before the meter here and would be fairly easy to operate in an emergency.A typical home with natural gas will have a couple of valves to shut off gas supply to the house. There’s usually one with a handle typically located between the main gas meter and the home (house-side gas valve). This is what you want to operate to shut off your home gas supply. The other valve will be somewhere between the gas meter and the street. You could usually only operate this with a wrench and provided you can find your house-side valve, you would leave this one alone. When you find your main gas valves you may find you have only wrench-operated valves. If this is the case it’s important to suitably store the wrench you need in a close location to the valve. Sometimes this means attaching one to the meter with a thin piece of wire, sometimes you can bag one up in plastic & tuck it somewhere. The important thing is that you keep it dry, in good condition and ready to use in a hurry.

The temperature and safety relief valve plays a critical role in the safety of an unvented cylinder system. Failure to install and maintain this element of the system correctly can result in a cylinder exploding and causing a great deal of damage to both property and life. It is advised that all safety control devices are serviced by a suitably qualified engineer on an annual basis

It’s important to know all about your water shut off tap but gas is even more risky, whatever local shut-off valves you might have, being able to simply cut it off to the home could be essential. If you aren’t certain of where your shut-off valves are don’t delay, it’s time to go and find it.

Where gas appliances are in use there a should be a local or appliance gas shut off or isolating valve. This is typically a lever ball valve with a handle (often yellow). When the handle is in-line with the pipe, the valve is open and gas will flow to your appliance. To shut off the gas to the appliance, turn the handle 90 degrees so it’s perpendicular to the pipe. Locating all of your appliance shut off valves is important in case you need to use them in a hurry. If you don’t find a valve, you may not have any installed. A good gas safe plumber will help confirm that and will install suitable valves to give you that all-important control over your gas flow.

We should also say that in the most serious cases of a gas leak, it may be unsafe to spend any time turning off the supply. Protection of life must always come ahead of protection of property and minutes spent trying to turn off the gas supply could put you and/or others in harm’s way. Serious judgement must be exercised if dealing with gas and especially if there’s a leak or cause to shut it down in an emergency. If in doubt, retreat to safety and let professionals handle your emergency boiler or gas repair problem.
