Most Councils are now enforcing backflow compliance, and are carrying out audits to ensure property owners maintain the devices on site and have them tested on an annual basis. Councils are also insisting that backflow endorsed plumbers note any non-compliant installations and defects on the statutory form 9s during the annual testing of the devices.

Backflow prevention is by installation of compliant prevention devices to town water supply system to prevent contamination to our drinking supply (potable water). The most common devices that are used are Double Check Valves (DCV) and Reduced Pressure Zone devices (RPZ). There are also statutory requirement for testing of these devices to maintain compliance.

lf during testing, an RPZ or DCV or any other testable backflow device should fail, the valve must be repaired, serviced or replaced and re-tested as per current plumbing regulations. Most new blocks of units built today will have containment devices at the boundary for fire and domestic as another level of protecting our water supply.

The most common devices that are used are Double Check Valves (DCV) and Reduced Pressure Zone devices (RPZ). There are also statutory requirement for testing of these devices to maintain compliance. RPZ devices are installed in a property where there is deemed to be a high hazard such as wash down bays, close to the ocean, lakes and areas where there are chemicals stored. DCV devices are installed where there is deemed to be a medium hazard such as under fire hose reels. Low hazard devices are the vacuum breakers on hose taps and do not require testing, whereas the RPZ & DCV devices require testing every 12 months as per Australian Standards 3500 & AS2845.3. lf during testing, an RPZ or DCV or any other testable backflow device should fail, the valve must be repaired, serviced or replaced and re-tested as per current plumbing regulations. Sticking with Icon 65mm x 3m PVC Round Len Downpipe would be best, as that should mate up with that 60mm dropper. Use can use a couple of screws to hold the PVC pipe to the gal dropper. Icon 65mm PVC Round 112deg Bends will be used to send the pipe over to the wall and then straight down to the drain.

It really helped when you talked about backflow prevention and how it helps avoid water contamination. Recently, my wife and I moved into another house, and we started to notice how our water tastes weird. We’re not sure if our home’s water could be contaminated or something, so we’ll look for a professional’s help. Thanks for the information on water backflow and how to deal with it.

As opposed to connecting it to the drain, you might like to stop it 10cm from it, allowing the water to fall into it. Or, insert the PVC pipe directly into the mouth of the terracotta pipe. Patching cement can then be used to fill around the pipe and create a seal. The larger female end of a terracotta pipe is not readily connected to stormwater, whether that's 65 or 100mm. I'm unaware of a fitting allowing you to connect directly to it. There's a good chance that this is a sewerage pipe to which you are not allowed to connect stormwater in many areas.

I'm wondering if I need to attach something like this and then run some PVC pipe (round or rectangular) down to the drain.  If so, how do I go from 65mm at the top of the pipe down to 100mm at the bottom?  Should I use square or round PVC?
