The high-pressure switch is used in either a pressure tank-equipped system or an open tank system with a float valve to cut the pump off when a specific pressure is achieved. Small residential RO systems can theoretically operate at very low pressure (down to 35psi, according to certain membrane manufacturers), but the reality is that you won't obtain much water and the product water quality will be reduced if the RO unit operates below 45psi. The unit produces more rejected water, less drinking water, fills the storage tank more slowly, and produces lower quality water when the inlet pressure is low.

The majority of reverse osmosis membranes are intended to perform with water pressures of 60 PSI or greater, and they are tested to have a steady rejection rate of at least 97.5%. If the water pressure used to feed a RO system is lower than that, the system will generate less water of lower quality.
